In 1865, The Oak Hill Plantation, the forerunner of Parrish, was owned by Major William Iredell Turner a Civil War veteran. Turner moved to Bradenton in 1868 and sold Oak Hill to Crawford Parrish.

The Parrish family raised cattle and sheep. Other families gathered and started ranches nearby. Soon there was a small business district including a general store, blacksmith shop and then the railroad came through. John Parrish donated land for the train depot which became known as the Parrish stop—thus the area came to be known as Parrish.

Parrish may once have been a rural outpost of Manatee County, but today it is the center of growth due to the many acres of agricultural land within easy reach of I-75 and 275. Today huge planned communities cover the pasturelands where cattle roamed.
